Derek Winter DL,

Deputy Chief Coroner of England and Wales,

HM Senior Coroner for the City of Sunderland

‘A Day of Death Investigation’

6pm – 7pm Thursday 30th March 2023,

online on Zoom

The University of Bolton Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law invites you to this online (Zoom) lecture delivered by Derek Winter DL, Deputy Chief Coroner and HM Senior Coroner for the City of Sunderland.

Derek Winter DL qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and began his career practising family law.  In 2003, he was appointed HM Senior Coroner for the City of Sunderland, and in 2019 as one of the two first Deputy Chief Coroners of England and Wales.  Alongside these vital functions, he is also the Assistant Secretary of The Coroners’ Society of England & Wales, responsible for the Membership, Website and Annual Report.  He is also a Home Office Accredited UK Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Coroner and is part of the Chief Coroner’s Cadre of DVI Coroners.  In June 2015 he became a Deputy Lieutenant for County Durham.

Talking from the perspectives of both a Senior Coroner and as a Deputy Chief Coroner, this year’s Leeming Lecture entitled ‘A Day of Death Investigation’ focuses on the need for sufficiency of inquiry in a timely manner without the investigation into unnatural deaths descending into adversariness, as well as the importance of collaboration.  As such, a particular focus of this lecture is on the necessary interactions coroners have with others.

The Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law

The Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law is a unique research and training centre based within the University of Bolton.  The centre aims to provide a distinct area of legal education and research and to foster research synergies across the university and externally, to gain funding, actively undertake and publish research and to liaise with the Coroners’ Society and the Chief Coroner.  The Centre was founded in 2016 with the vision to provide legal education and research in the important area of coronial law, which has nationwide reach to all professions who interface with the coroners’ service.  As the Centre continues to develop and flourish, the Annual Leeming Lecture is a distinguished event, organized in memory of its founder and its first Honorary Director, the late Professor Jennifer Leeming, as a tribute to her invaluable contributions towards its establishment.
